Does your Tawk.to chatbot break the EU AI Act?
From 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires that people interacting with an AI system are clearly told so — at the latest at the first interaction. If you run Tawk.to (Apollo AI (optional)) on a site with EU visitors, here's what that means for you.

Yes, if its AI features answer your visitors — and the disclosure is probably missing.
What Tawk.to does by default
Tawk.to is free live chat that human agents run, with an optional AI assistant (Apollo). If you enable Apollo AI to answer visitors, Article 50 applies and you must add the disclosure yourself — Tawk.to won't.
How to make your Tawk.to chatbot compliant
- If Apollo AI is on: set the greeting/first message to state it's AI.
- Keep AI answers distinguishable from human agents.
- Add an AI transparency page and badge.
- Keep dated evidence.
The fine print
Non-compliance can be fined up to €15,000,000 or 3% of worldwide annual turnover (Art. 99(4)(g); for SMEs, the lower of the two). Enforcement by national authorities starts 2 August 2026.
